Two Knowsley volunteer groups have received the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award given to local volunteer groups in the UK.
Safari Kids Club, in Stockbridge Village, and the Eco Therapy Garden in Kirkby were both recognised under the scheme, which honours outstanding work led by volunteers in their own communities.
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is considered the equivalent of an MBE for groups rather than individuals. Recipients are assessed locally and nationally before being chosen, and the awards are presented on the King’s behalf by the Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside.
For both groups, the honour is national recognition of work that is rooted firmly in their own neighbourhoods — a children’s group in Stockbridge Village and a green space in Kirkby, each run by people giving their time for those around them.
The award adds to a strong year for volunteering in the borough, which also held its first Mayor’s Volunteer Awards in March.
