Knowsley Council has secured £19.142 million from Homes England towards the regeneration of Huyton town centre, the borough’s cabinet was told on 18 March.
According to the cabinet papers, Cllr Tony Brennan, the cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, reported that in February Homes England had approved the council’s application for £19.142 million through the Brownfield Infrastructure and Land Fund.
The fund is a national government programme, run by the housing and regeneration agency Homes England, that pays for the infrastructure and site preparation needed to bring difficult brownfield land — former industrial or already-developed sites — back into use, most often for housing. Approval of a bid means the money is committed to the council for the works it set out, rather than handed over as a lump sum.
For Huyton, the award sits alongside other regeneration funding the cabinet has handled this year, including £600,000 accepted in March for the town centre from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Regeneration Capacity Building Fund.
Cabinet is the council’s executive — the body where decisions on spending, services and policy are taken between full council meetings. Regeneration and economic development sits with Cllr Brennan, who can be contacted at tony.brennan@knowsley.gov.uk. Council finances rest with the cabinet member for resources, Cllr Jayne E Lonergan (jayne.lonergan@knowsley.gov.uk).
The full report and minutes for the 18 March cabinet meeting are published on the council’s meetings portal, where dates of upcoming meetings are also listed.
